Course Description:
This micro-credential equips aspiring writers with the skills to craft professional-quality creative content, including stories, poems, and narratives. Through hands-on exercises, practical writing assignments, and interactive modules, participants will develop storytelling techniques, character creation skills, poetic expression, and advanced writing strategies. By the end of the course, learners will have a portfolio of creative work ready for publishing or freelancing, and the ability to write with clarity, emotion, and originality.
Syllabus
Module 1: Introduction to Creative Writing (1 Hour)
Topics:
- What is creative writing?
- Differences between creative, academic, and business writing
- Creative writer’s mindset and observation skills
- Overview of storytelling, character, and narrative forms
Activity: 5-minute freewriting exercise
Outcome: Understand the fundamentals of creative writing and develop a creative mindset.
Module 2: Storytelling Fundamentals (4 Hours)
Topics:
- Elements of Storytelling: Plot, Setting, Characters, Conflict, Theme, Dialogue, Point of View
- Plot Structure Models: Freytag’s Pyramid, Three-Act Structure, Hero’s Journey, Non-linear storytelling
- Setting & World-Building: Using senses, creating believable worlds, contextual details
- Conflict Types: Character vs Character, Self, Society, Nature, Technology
Activities: Write a 6-sentence micro-story, convert a news headline into a story plot, setting description challenge (100 words)
Outcome: Develop strong narrative structure and build engaging story worlds.
Module 3: Character Development (Detailed) (5 Hours)
Topics:
- Building Strong Characters: Protagonist, Antagonist, Supporting, character profiles, internal/external traits
- Techniques for Character Growth: Character arcs, backstory, transformation
- Dialogue Writing: Natural vs forced dialogue, subtext, realistic conversations
- Character Voice & Perspective: First-person voice, speech patterns, personality through voice
- Relationships Between Characters: Friendships, rivalry, romance, mentorship
Activities: Create a full character profile, write a 200-word dialogue scene, rewrite a character from another POV, show a character flaw in action
Outcome: Create believable, dynamic characters with distinct voices and relationships.
Module 4: Poetry & Narrative Forms (4 Hours)
Topics:
- Introduction to Poetry: Sensory imagery, figurative language
- Types of Poetry: Free verse, Haiku, Sonnet, Narrative poem, Spoken word
- Poetry Techniques: Rhyme schemes, rhythm, meter, enjambment, symbolism
- Narrative Forms: Flash fiction, microfiction, short stories, personal narratives, creative non-fiction
Activities: Write a 3-line haiku, create a metaphoric poem, convert personal memory into flash fiction
Outcome: Express ideas creatively through poetry and diverse narrative forms.
Module 5: Advanced Techniques in Creative Writing (3 Hours)

- Show, Don’t Tell
- Sensory detail enhancement
- Emotional impact creation
- Foreshadowing, suspense, and pacing
- Developing unique writing styles
Activities: Rewrite “telling” paragraphs to “showing,” pacing exercises, sensory-only scene writing
Outcome: Apply advanced techniques to elevate storytelling and writing style.
Module 6: Editing & Revising Creative Work (2 Hours)
Topics:
- Drafting vs Editing
- Clarity, consistency, and flow
- Removing clichés
- Strengthening dialogue and description
- Responsible use of AI tools for editing
Activities: Peer review session, edit own micro-story using checklist
Outcome: Revise and refine creative work to achieve polished, publication-ready quality.
Module 7: Final Project & Portfolio Development (1 Hour)
Final Submission Includes:
- One short story (400–700 words) OR
- Two poems + flash fiction (150–200 words)
Portfolio Review: Instructor feedback, tips for publishing online, and preparing a freelancing portfolio
Outcome: Compile a professional portfolio of creative writing pieces.
